UQ Excels at Lord Mayor's Business Awards

1 Jan 2014

UQ has excelled at this year’s Lord Mayor’s Business awards with alumni and the institution taking away awards on the night. Charging electric cars 20 times faster than a standard wall socket saw three UQ engineering alumni win the Nova 106.9 Award for Business Innovation, while excellence in international education delivery won UQ an award.

David Finn, James Kennedy and Paul Sernia who met as engineering students at the University of Queensland won with their product the Veefil Electric Vehicle Fast Charger which they describe as a ‘game changer’ for electric vehicles.

All three were all involved in the UQ’s Solar Car Racing team where they founded Tritium to commercialise the electronic technology they developed whilst part of the racing team.

Without fast charging, electric cars can only be driven for just over 100kms before they need to be slow charged from a wall socket for eight hours. The Veefil makes it possible for electric vehicle drivers to drive hundreds of kilometres a day and recharge in less than 30 minutes each time.

Tritium has taken the trio to new depths. James was the battery specialist on James Cameron’s Deep Sea Challenger electric submarine expedition to the deepest part of the world’s ocean last year.

UQ was also awarded on the night, receiving the Award for Excellence in International Education Delivery.

UQ Office of Undergraduate Education Director Dr Jessica Gallagher said the University was nominated for demonstrating excellence in international education delivery.

“UQ has developed a unique student leadership programme for undergraduate students, the UQ Advantage Award,” she said.

“The award provides students with opportunities to extend themselves beyond the classroom, gain a better understanding of the world, and develop key competencies that employers value.”

Dr Gallagher said UQ was widely recognised throughout Asia, with outstanding alumni engaged in senior positions across academia, business and government.

The awards reward and celebrate companies that are champions for Brisbane’s growth industries and inspire others to become business leaders.
