The University’s esteem and reputation is inextricably tied to its alumni and what they are achieving in the world.
Courting the Greats, UQ's annual flagship alumni event, is an opportunity for schools, faculties and colleges to recognise and celebrate alumni achievement, engage with alumni and enhance the University’s esteem as a major global institution through the official awards program and gala dinner.
This year the University received a large number of nominees across all categories. Being nominated is an honour for alumni in itself and the process is a powerful engagement tool.
The 2011 event attracted more than 300 guests on 24 September at the UQ Centre. The night honoured and celebrated the achievements of the University’s nearly 200,000-strong alumni community and paid special tribute to the 2011 ‘greats’. The 2011 winners for Alumnus of the Year, International Alumnus of the Year (two winners) and Young Alumnus of the Year all exemplified the University’s goal to be an institution that is producing leaders who are helping to solve global challenges. The challenge for this year’s event was to maintain the momentum from 2010’s centenary celebration. Together with the awards ceremony, the event featured a full-stage production including entertainment from the UQ Pipe Band at Emmanuel College, the School of Music’s Tropical Dance Orchestra and ballroom dancers, in addition to circus performers and roving entertainment. The unique entertainment added a festive ambience and provided a talking point for guests.
Learnings for future events include keeping the entertainment connected to the University and considering intercultural sensitivities.
Guests and alumni were also offered a special private viewing of the UQ Art Museum exhibitions prior to the event.
