Global adventure gear marketplace launched by UQ alumnus

24 June 2019

Ever gone and holiday and wanted affordable access to sporting or adventure equipment without having to take it with you?

Travellers can now get easy access to surf, bike and snow gear with the launch of the global adventure gear rental marketplace, Quipmo.

The idea of making access to quality gear more efficient, affordable and readily available was the mastermind of UQ Business School MBA alumnus and UQ Future Leader Award recipient Chris Evans. The peer to peer marketplace was first launched in February 2017.

Quipmo has now attracted over 1600 listings in 18 countries and listings have grown by 60% this year alone.

Chris originally came up with the idea after having surfed in various places around the world and thought how handy it was to have access to a surfboard while on holiday.

“Think of a business model where everyone can win,” Chris said.

People and businesses come to the marketplace to either hire or hire out their surf, snow and bike gear.

“I found the co-creation business models of Airbnb, Airtasker, Camplify, and Health Engine fascinating”, Chris said.

Chris said that marketplaces are a notoriously complex business model.

“It’s not simply a chicken and egg problem, credibility has to be earned before even getting to that point. Interest in Quipmo to date has been phenomenal however, which is perhaps best represented by us now possessing over 70,000 followers along with a dozen major strategic partnerships that include such organisations as Bicycle Queensland, Disabled Wintersport Australia, Surfing New Zealand, and the Association of Professional Bodyboarding (APB) World Tour”, he said.

Quipmo is now part of The University of Queensland’s 2019 HYPE UQ SPIN Accelerator, helping startups become major players in global sportstech innovation.

SPIN Accelerator, developed by HYPE Sports Innovation, is a global sportstech startup accelerator that delivers a sports-specific program providing access to global mentors, investors and experienced hosts to fast-track promising local startups onto the world stage.
