John Marshall Buchanan is widely acknowledged as the most successful cricket coach in history.

Since 1999, he has coached the Australian Cricket Team to World Cup Champion and Test Cricket World Champion status, with a winning score of 70 percent including a world record run of 16 consecutive test victories and 14 one-day wins. As Queensland Bulls coach 1994-1999, he delivered the team’s first and second Sheffield Shield wins and two Mercantile Mutual Cup wins. In 1995 he was named Australian National League Coach of the Year. His technology-based, personalised approach to training, playing and team management has had a wide-ranging impact on the training and development of promising cricketers. His methods have influenced cricket coaches worldwide; and demand for his training and motivational skills extends to the corporate sector.

Born in Ipswich on April 5, 1953, John Marshall Buchanan attended The Southport School before gaining a Bachelor of Human Movement Studies from The University of Queensland (1976), a Diploma of Teaching from Griffith University (1984) and a Master of Arts in Sports Administration
degree from the University of Alberta, Canada (1986).

His cricketing career began at The University of Queensland, where he played 13 seasons of grade cricket for the University club. He represented the State in seven Sheffield Shield matches between 1978 and 1979, scoring 160 runs in 13 visits to the crease with a top score of 41 against New South Wales. In 1975 and 1978 he was Brisbane A Grade Cricketer of the Year. He spent some time as a professional cricketer with Oldham in the Central Lancashire League, UK, and in 1998 coached Middlesex County Cricket Club.

His other sporting interests, both as a player and administrator, have included posts as Sport Coordinator for the XII Commonwealth Games (1981-82), National Director of the Volleyball Federation (1983-84) and Manager, Sports Development with Queensland’s Department of Tourism,
Sports and Racing. He maintains a close association with The University of Queensland’s School of Human Movement Studies and has been an adjunct associate professor in sports management at Griffith University since 2004.

Chancellor, in recognition of his distinguished career and his contribution to the development of sport in Queensland and Australia, I present to you John Marshall Buchanan, Bachelor of Human Movement Studies of The University of Queensland, Diploma in Teaching of Griffith University,
and Master of Arts of the University of Alberta, Canada, for the award of the degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa to which he has been admitted by the Senate of the University.
