CITATION

Mr Chancellor,

Queensland public life has been enriched by the services of successive generations of several outstanding families. The Honourable Mr Justice John Murtagh Macrossan, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland, embodies this fine tradition. After graduating BA LLB from this University, he obtained the degree of Bachelor of Civil Law from the University of Oxford, was called to the Queensland Bar and became a Queen's Counsel in 1967. In 1980 he became Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland and Chief Justice in 1989. In addition to his positions of leadership and responsibility within the Bar Association and Bar Board, he has been President of the Queensland Art Gallery Society, 1978-82, and Director and Chairman of the Queensland Committee of the Churchill Trust, 1985-92. We recognise particularly his role within tertiary education as the current Chancellor of Griffith University.

In the 1993 Queen's Birthday honours he was created Companion of the General Division of the Order of Australia for services to the law, higher education and the arts.

Mr Chancellor, For his distinguished contributions to the law and to education, I present to you the Honourable Mr Justice John Murtagh Macrossan, Companion of the Order of Australia, Bachelor of Civil Law of the University of Oxford and Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws of this University, for the conferral of the award of Doctor of Laws honoris causa, to which he has been admitted by the Senate of the University.
