Mr Chancellor, 

Arthur Page, born in Yokohama in 1922, settled in Australia and served with theAIF from 1942 to 1946 and later in the Australian Army Reserve Intelligence Corps from 1950 to 1972, retiring with the rank of Colonel. In 1950 he obtained a Diploma in Physiotherapy from The University of Queensland and worked from then until 1983 as Chief Physi­otherapist with the Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service in Queensland. During this period. he played a prominent role in the Astronomers' Association of Queensland and the· Astronomical Society of Queensland, serving as President of the latter from 1958 to 1962. He is also a member of the Astronomical Society of Australia, the Astronomical Society of America, and the International Astronomical Union, the last a rare honour for a non­professional. He is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics. In 1973 he was awarded the Nicolaus Copernicus Medal by Cardinal Wojtyla, the present Pope. The Astronomical Society of Australia memorialised his late wife in establishing the Bernice Page Medal awarded annually for excellence in amateur astronomy. Since 1987 he has been an Honorary Research Consultant in the Department of Physics, which has cooperated in upgrading the equipment at Mr Page's Mount Tamborine Observatory where notable observations have been made. This has now been donated to The University of Queensland and is being relocated at Mount Kent near Toowoomba where it will be jointly operated with the University of Southern Queensland. 

Mr Chancellor, in recognition of his distinguished contribution to the field of astronomy and to The University of Queensland, I present to you Arthur Anthony Page, Diploma in Physiotherapy of this university, Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, Honorary Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics, for the conferral of the award of Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa to which he has been admitted by the Senate of the University.
