CITATION

Award of Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa

Dr Dorothea Sandars

Mr Chancellor,

Dorothea Fanny Sandars, affectionately known to all as Dot, was born in Perth and studied at the University of Western Australia where she graduated Bachelor of Science with first class honours and subsequently as Master of Science. She obtained her PhD at the University of London. She joined the University of Queensland in 1946 as an Assistant Lecturer in Zoology and later held Senior Lectureships successively in the Departments of Parasitology, Medicine and Pathology. From 1971 until her retirement ten years later she was Sub Dean in the Faculty of Science, and it was in these years that she became an institution within the institution. As a member of three Senates during the 'seventies and 'eighties she was a redoubtable champion of the causes to which she gave her leadership, an ever vigilant watchdog over the interests of the University. During the years of her retirement her interest in and commitment to the University of Queensland have remained unabated, and she has continued to bring life and humour to every situation in which she has been involved. For almost half a century she has been a member of the Australian Federation of University Women, a senior office bearer at both State and National levels of an organisation that has raised funds to enable women to undertake postgraduate study abroad.

Mr Chancellor, in recognition of her contributions to the University of Queensland, I present to you Dr Dorothea Fanny Sandars, MSc WesternAustralia, PhD London, for the conferral of the award of Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa, to which she has been admitted by the Senate of the University.
