Chancellor,
Mr Robert Bishop, the Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Silicon Graphics Incorporated, has had a distinguished career in computing science that spans four decades.
Mr Bishop’s career began in 1964 in Australia when he worked as a scientist with Ultrasound and NMR.
Since then, he has held senior, managerial positions with Apollo Computer Incorporated and Digital Equipment Corporation. During this time, he and his family lived in five countries: Australia, Japan, the United States, Germany and Switzerland.
In 1986, Mr Bishop joined Silicon Graphics Incorporated as founding president of SGI’s World Trade Corporation, and was responsible for all company activities outside North America.
SGI is the world’s leading provider of high-performance computing, complex data-management and visualisation solutions for technical and creative professionals. SGI systems are used in the design and construction of safer cars and aeroplanes, discovering new medications, predicting the weather, for movie special effects or mission-critical support for government and defence.
In 1999, Mr Bishop was appointed Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the company.
Mr Bishop has a Bachelor of Science degree with first-class honours in mathematical physics from The University of Adelaide and a Master of Science from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University.
He is an elected member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences, serves on the international advisory panels for the Multimedia Super Corridor in Malaysia and for National ICT Australia, and is a member of the Executive Committee for the Council on Competitiveness in Washington D.C.
Chancellor, in recognition of his distinguished career and contribution to the development of computing science, I present to you Mr Robert Bishop, Bachelor of Science of the University of Adelaide, and Master of Science of New York University, for conferral of the award of Doctor of Science honoris causa to which he has been admitted by the Senate of the University.
