UQ Social Outreach Studio

The UQ Social Outreach Studio Fund supports our architecture students to work with communities on design challenges to deliver real benefits for people facing social or economic disadvantage. We do this in collaboration with communities in Queensland and the Asia-Pacific, with whom we have existing strong relationships.

The UQ Social Outreach Studio Fund will help students with the cost of community engagement and travel to rural Queensland, Indigenous, and Pacific Island communities. The Fund will also enable exhibition, publication, workshops and support for the community to make the most of our visit.

The UQ Social Outreach Studio aims to connect architecture students with communities where architects and design ideas are less common. Students learning in remote and regional areas are better equipped to meet future challenges and will be encouraged to work outside their comfort zone in their careers as architects.

Our initial goal is to raise $10,000 to enable a regional South East Queensland studio. This would entail 25 students and one lecturer travelling and working with a community on local design challenges. At the UQ School of Architecture, we frequently run national and international studios, however, student participation can be curtailed by grant restrictions around age, nationality and specified locations. The UQ Social Outreach Studios enhance the diverse education of UQ Architecture students. Importantly, the Fund would ensure all students in a studio would have equitable access to these formative educational experiences. The School will target specific places and projects where we identify opportunities and synergies with communities. Following a regional studio, we aim to raise $35,000 to support an international studio project in the Asia-Pacific region.
