Mr Dane Bird-Smith

“Behind the scenes is where champions are made, and UQ has been providing athletes with an amazing support web so that we can make giant leaps on and off the track.”

Race walker Dane Bird-Smith is an Olympic medalist who won bronze while representing Australia in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Bird-Smith also won gold in the 2017 Oceania and Australian 20km Race Walking Championships.

His passion for athletics started at an early age, and stemmed from watching his father and coach, Olympian David Smith, train and compete.

Bird-Smith is now training to compete in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and turning his attention from walking down the racetrack to walking down the aisle, as he prepares to marry the girl of his dreams.
