Chancellor,
Mr Matthew McLennan is a highly successful international funds manager, a generous philanthropist, and a passionate advocate for education.
Mr McLennan’s association with The University of Queensland (UQ) stretches back to the late 1980s, when he enrolled to study for a Bachelor of Commerce degree. After graduating in 1990, he went on to complete the honours program and graduated with First Class Honours and the University Medal in 1991. He later completed a Master of International Commercial Law from UQ in 2017. Mr McLennan is also a CFA Charterholder.
After graduating from UQ in 1991, Mr McLennan joined the Queensland Investment Corporation, a newly-formed, government-owned investment company that was established to serve the long-term interests of the Queensland Government pension plans.
In 1994, he joined Goldman Sachs in Sydney in the Investment Banking Division before moving to New York a year later to join the Goldman Sachs Asset Management’s US Value Team. In 2001, he co-founded and was the Equity Chief Investment Officer of the Investment Strategy Group for the Asset Management Division’s high net worth clients. In 2003, he co-founded Global Equity Partners, as part of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, relocating to London as a co-Portfolio Manager.
After 14 years with Goldman Sachs, Mr McLennan joined First Eagle Investment Management, returning to New York in 2008. He currently serves as co-Head of First Eagle Investments’ Global Value Team responsible for managing USD$109.5 billion.
Mr McLennan’s passion for education is evident in his generous support of philanthropic initiatives, as well as his contributions to a range of boards. He serves as a Trustee Emeritus, and was former President of the Board, of the Trinity School in New York City, member and former Chair of the Board of Dean’s Advisors of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Trustee and Treasurer for the Library of America. As a valued Board member of UQ’s Not if, When campaign, Mr McLennan’s leadership, advocacy and personal support helped the campaign far exceed its goals. Additionally, through his contributions as a long-standing board member of The University of Queensland in the United States of America (TUQIA), he has helped to raise financial support for a number of important education and research initiatives. His many career achievements and contributions were also recognised with a UQ Vice-Chancellor’s Alumni Excellence Award in 2014.
