The UQ Faculty of Business, Economics and Law Dean’s Society, established in 2014, honours loyal donors who shape future leaders and drive meaningful change. The Society brings together a community of passionate alumni and supporters dedicated to advancing education, research and opportunity through its tiers of membership:

  • young donors who contribute a minimum donation of $500

  • annual members who contribute $1,000 or more each year

  • lifetime members who have donated $100,000 or more.

Creating a legacy of giving

From the very beginning, UQ alum Mr Paul Taylor AM (Bachelor of Business Management and Bachelor of Commerce) has been at the heart of this initiative. As inaugural Chair of the Dean’s Society, he has played a pivotal role in building a culture of philanthropy within the UQ community. His leadership has inspired countless alumni to reconnect with their alma mater and invest in the next generation of students and researchers.

Paul’s belief in the power of new knowledge and the importance of giving back is both compelling and deeply personal:

Paul Taylor AM

“If we want to maintain a system where anybody can go to university regardless of their financial circumstances, it’s up to alumni to step forward and fill any gaps through philanthropy.”

This philosophy has guided Paul and his wife, Sue, in their extraordinary philanthropic journey. Since 2008, the Taylors have made numerous significant contributions to UQ, supporting a wide range of initiatives, including the Clem Jones Centre for Ageing Dementia Research, vaccine research, the UQ Library, medical research, emergency student support funds, and a variety of scholarships and academic programs.

Their transformative contribution was the foundational gift to establish UQ’s Centre for the Business and Economics of Health in 2015. Australia’s first centre dedicated to research at the intersection of business, economics and health has become a national leader in health systems research.

The Taylors’ support has enabled the Centre to:

  • Develop clinical guidelines and screening protocols used both locally and internationally.

  • Create tools and models that improve healthcare efficiency and patient outcomes.

  • Influence the allocation of $500 million in Medicare and PBS funding.

  • Advise government about health professionals’ scope of practice.

  • Create tools and models that improve healthcare efficiency and patient outcomes.

The Taylor Family Chair in Health Policy and Economics, endowed through their philanthropy, has accelerated UQ’s research in this area and helped attract world-class research leaders. Today, the Centre is home to 30 staff and 16 postgraduate research students and manages a portfolio of grants and projects valued at over $40 million.

Paul continues to give his time and expertise as an advisory board member and as a guest speaker at UQ events. His leadership and generosity have not only advanced UQ’s research capabilities but also inspired others to contribute, creating a ripple effect with impacts across the University and beyond.

Paul’s philanthropic reach extends far beyond one Faculty. He was a Board Member for UQ’s first comprehensive philanthropic campaign, Not if, when, which raised over $607 million and established more than 130 new endowed scholarships for students experiencing hardship.

In recognition of his contributions, Paul received the Philanthropy Leadership Award at the Creative Partnerships Awards 2022 and in 2024, he was honoured with the Great Australian Philanthropy Award by Research Australia. In 2026, Paul was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the arts and education through such governance and philanthropic roles.

Why give back?

Paul’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact alumni can have when they choose to give back. Philanthropy is more than a donation – it’s a powerful force for change and also deeply rewarding for those who choose to give.

Members of the Dean’s Society, led by Paul, experience firsthand the profound impact their generosity has on students, researchers, and the broader community. But the benefits extend far beyond the University.

Here’s what donors gain when they give back:

  • A lasting legacy: Your contribution becomes part of a transformative journey – supporting future leaders, advancing groundbreaking research that benefits society, and providing life-changing opportunities for students who may not be able to afford a university education.

  • Connection with the University community: Joining a network of like-minded alumni and supporters who share your values and vision. Engaging with academic leaders, decision-makers and other philanthropists. Attending exclusive events and staying connected to the University’s progress.

  • Recognition and influence: Dean’s Society members are celebrated for their commitment and leadership. Your support helps shape strategic priorities and drives innovation across the Faculty.

  • Personal fulfilment: Giving is a meaningful way to express gratitude for your education and success. It’s a chance to “pay it forward” and make a tangible difference in others’ lives. It’s also a great way to contribute to a better society through education, discovery and impact.

  • Insight and engagement: Staying informed about cutting-edge research and developments in your field. Donors often gain access to thought leadership, research briefings and opportunities to contribute their expertise.
