Chancellor,
Emeritus Professor John Simmons AM is a distinguished mechanical engineer and academic who has made significant contributions to the field of aerospace and vibration engineering.
Professor Simmons completed a Bachelor of Science in 1961 and a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) with first-class honours in 1963, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967 – all at the University of Sydney.
His pioneering work in hypersonic aerodynamics, in collaboration with Professor Ray Stalker, established global benchmarks and advanced experimental techniques and facilities.
In recognition, Professor Simmons was awarded a visiting professorship at the NASA Langley Research Center, where he supported key hypersonic research programs.
He joined UQ in 1972, where he served as Professor, Dean of Engineering and later Head of the School of Engineering from 1990 to 2004. His leadership transformed engineering education and strengthened the University’s research standing, positioning us as a global leader in hypersonic aerodynamics.
He also demonstrated significant leadership beyond the University as founding Chair of the Institution of Engineers, Australia National Committee on Space Engineering from 1984 to 1990.
Professor Simmons was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in 1993, Honorary Fellow of The Institution of Engineers, Australia (now Engineers Australia) in 1995 and later appointed Senior Member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
Professor Simmons also played a pivotal role in shaping engineering education as Chair of the 1995 - 1996 National Review of Engineering Education, leading the landmark report Changing the Culture, which fundamentally transformed engineering education policy and practice across Australia.
Over decades, Professor Simmons mentored generations of engineers. His commitment to future generations is reflected in the John Simmons Student Mobility Fund, recently expanded with Dr Gabrielle Kelly, the first female Mechanical Engineering PhD graduate he supervised at UQ, to support enriching experiences for UQ engineering students.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Professor Simmons was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2011 for service to engineering and education, particularly through innovative approaches to curriculum reform and the development of the international student market.
His many honours include the Advance Australia Award for Outstanding Contribution in Service to Space Technology, Queensland Engineer of the Year, Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning and the Prime Minister’s Centenary Medal.
Chancellor, I present to you Emeritus Professor John Simmons, Member of the Order of Australia, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) with first class honours and Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Sydney, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and Honorary Fellow of Engineers Australia, for the award of Doctor of the University honoris causa, bestowed by the Senate of The University of Queensland.
