Geoffrey Rush AC

Dr Geoffrey Rush is an internationally renowned film, television and theatre actor. Dr Rush was born in Toowoomba in 1951, before moving to Brisbane where he completed his schooling. In 1972 he graduated from UQ with a Bachelor of Arts.

After establishing himself as one of Australia’s leading theatre actors, Dr Rush became internationally recognised for his performance in the 1996 film Shine, for which he received an Academy Award for Best Actor. Since then, his success in film and television on the international stage has continued with much-lauded roles in major productions including the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and The King’s Speech.

Over the course of his career Dr Rush has earned numerous acting accolades. He is one of only 24 who have achieved the “Triple Crown of Acting” – winning an Academy Award (for film), an Emmy Award (for television) and a Tony Award (for theatre). In 1997 he was awarded a Doctor of Letters honoris causa from UQ, and in 2014 he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia.
