Nicholas Veltjens

While he has held a position as a physiotherapist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for 10 years, Nicholas Veltjens has been volunteering since 2010 with Mercy Ships, a global charity that provides free health care and community services to those who have limited or no access to either.

Mercy Ships has operated hospital ships in developing nations for almost 40 years, and Veltjens offers post-operative rehabilitation to patients who have undergone orthopaedic, burns and plastic surgery.

Within Mercy Ships, Veltjens has campaigned to introduce a Ponseti Management Program for the treatment of clubfoot. In August 2015, he travelled to Madagascar to begin the roll out of the program to local clinicians and doctors, ensuring children can be treated for the debilitating illness even when Mercy Ships are not docked locally.
