Sir Lionel McCray

1982

CITATION

MR CHANCELLOR:

LIONEL JOSEPH MCCRAY HAS BEEN A MEMBER OF THE UNIVERSITY SENATE SINCE 1972 AND HAS SERVED ON ITS FINANCE COMMITTEE SINCE 1973, TAKING OVER AS CHAIRMAN IN 1981. THE IMPORTANCE OF HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT OF THE INSTITUTION DERIVES FROM HIS EXTENSIVE BACKGROUND IN AFFAIRS OF COMMERCE, COMMENCING WITH HIS FIRST EMPLOYMENT IN THE ECLIPSE WINDMILL COMPANY IN 1923 AND CONTINUING TO THE GENERAL MANAGERSHIP OF Q.U.F. INDUSTRIES LTD. SUBSEQUENTLY HE HAS BEEN ELECTED AS DIRECTOR AND CHAIRMAN OF DIRECTORS IN MAJOR QUEENSLAND COMPANIES.

HE HAS SERVED AS A MEMBER OF BOTH STATE AND FEDERAL ADVISORY COMMITTEES CONCERNED WITH PRODUCTIVITY AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE EXPORT MARKET, AND HAS BEEN A MEMBER OF THE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT DELEGATIONS TO ECONOMIC CONFERENCES IN SINGAPORE AND MANILA. HE WAS PRESIDENT OF THE QUEENSLAND CHAMBER OF MANUFACTURERS (1950-53), VICE-PRESIDENT OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT (1950-56), AND OF THE ASSOCIATED CHAMBER OF MANUFACTURERS OF AUSTRALIA (1951-53). IN COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES HE CONTINUES AS A TRUSTEE OF THE SPINA-BIFIDA ASSOCIATION, A MEMBER OF THE STATE COMMITTEE, THE QUEEN'S SILVER JUBILEE APPEAL FOR YOUNG AUSTRALIANS AND A MEMBER OF THE STATE COUNCIL, INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS. HIS SERVICES TO COMMERCE AND TO THE COMMUNITY WERE RECOGNISED IN 1978 THROUGH THE AWARD OF A KNIGHTHOOD.
IN DAYS OF FINANCIAL TRIBULATION, UNIVERSITIES REQUIRE THE ASSISTANCE OF INDIVIDUALS WITH THEIR FEET PLANTED FIRMLY ON THE GROUND, BUT WITH SENSITIVITY TO THE HIGH-FL YING ASPIRATIONS OF THE IVORY TOWER. AS A GOLFER, LIONEL MCCRAY WELL KNOWS THE IMPORTANCE OF CAREFUL POSITIONING OF THE FEET AS WELL AS A FLEXIBLE STANCE. HE ALSO KNOWS THAT IN OTHER SITUATIONS IT CAN BE IMPORTANT TO LIFT THE HEAD AND LOOK BEYOND THE IMMEDIATE. HE IS AN ENTHUSIASTIC BIRD-WATCHER AND ASTRONOMER.

APART FROM HIS CONTRIBUTIONS BASED ON HIS PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND KNOWLEDGE, HE BRINGS TO ALL AREAS OF SENATE ACTIVITY THE CAPACITY FOR WISE JUDGMENT AND MODERATION OF VIEW WHICH, EARLIER, HAD BEEN WELL RECOGNIZED IN THE EXTERNAL COMMUNITY.

MR CHANCELLOR, FOR SERVICE TO THE COMMONWEALTH, THE STATE OF QUEENSLAND AND THE UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND, I PRESENT TO YOU LIONEL JOSEPH MCCRAY, KNIGHT BACHELOR, FELLOW OF THE AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS , ASSOCIATE OF THE CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF SECRETARIES AND ADMINISTRATORS, FELLOW OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT, FOR ADMISSION TO THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF LAWS, HONORIS CAUSA.
