Professor Nicholas (Nick) Nicolaides AM

Professor Nick Nicolaides was a pathologist and co-founder of Australian pathology service, Sullivan Nicolaides. Born in West End in 1928, Professor Nicolaides completed his medical studies at UQ in 1951.

While working as a registrar, Professor Nicolaides developed an interest in pathology – particularly autopsies. Over two years he conducted 550 autopsies and was inspired to become a pathologist. In 1957, he joined Dr John Sullivan as a partner in his private pathology practice in Brisbane. As demand for pathology testing grew, the business evolved and became Sullivan Nicolaides – now one of the largest pathology services in Australia.

Professor Nicolaides was active in the community, receiving a Distinguished Service Award and honorary life membership for his service to the Australian Red Cross, of which he was Queensland chairman and national vice chairman. He also served as president of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and president of the Queensland branch of the Australian Medical Association. He was a fellow of the College of American Pathologists and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and a member of nine scientific societies.

He was named a Member of the Order of Australia in 1990 and received a Doctor of Medicine honoris causa from UQ in 2002. Professor Nicolaides passed away in 2010.
