Dr Graham Hughes AM

Dr Graham Hughes AM is a distinguished public servant and former Queensland insurance commissioner.

In 1994, as Queensland insurance commissioner, Dr Hughes led the creation of the Motor Accident Insurance Act, and in turn the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC).

The legislation guaranteed funding for road safety, injury rehabilitation and medical research. This funding enabled the establishment of The Centre of National Research on Disability and Rehabilitation Medicine (CONROD) (renamed RECOVER Injury Research Centre in 2016) – a joint initiative of MAIC and UQ of which Dr Hughes was founding chair.

Dr Hughes was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa by UQ in 2002. In 2004, he was named a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of his contribution to research initiatives into road accident prevention, trauma treatment and rehabilitation, and public administration of insurance and workers’ compensation.
