Professor Peter Høj AC

Chancellor, 

Professor Peter Høj AC is a nationally and internationally recognised leader in the higher education and research sectors, with more than 20 years’ senior leadership experience in universities. 

Professor Høj was educated at the University of Copenhagen, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science and a PhD. His research in biochemistry has been extensively published, and he is widely recognised as a leader in his field. 

Professor Høj served as the Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of South Australia from 2007 to 2012, and of The University of Queensland from 2012 to 2020. He is currently the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Adelaide. 

As Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of Queensland, Professor Høj led UQ to become one of the world’s top-50 universities, as well as attain the highest student satisfaction in teaching and learning quality amongst research intensive universities in Australia. 

His leadership was crucial to the development of UQ’s first Reconciliation Action Plan, as well as the success of the University’s first comprehensive philanthropic campaign, which raised $607 million for teaching, learning and research between 2013 and 2020. During Professor Høj’s tenure, UQ also became the first major university in the world to produce more energy than it consumes through the Warwick Solar Farm.

In 2019, Professor Høj was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for his eminent service to higher education and to science, particularly to the commercialisation of research, and to policy development and reform. 

In addition to his academic leadership roles, Professor Høj is currently Trustee of the Australian Cancer Research Foundation and a member of the IP Group Australia Steering Group. He has previously served on the boards of Wine Australia, Group of Eight, Universities Australia, CSIRO, Business SA and the South Australian Health and Medical Research. He has also served on the Australian Government’s University Foreign Interference Taskforce, the Advisory Board for the Medical Research Future Fund, and the Australian Human Rights Commission Leadership Council on Cultural Diversity,

Chancellor, I present to you Professor Peter Høj, Companion of the Order of Australia, Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of the University honoris causa of the University of Copenhagen, Doctor of the University honoris causa of the University of Adelaide, Doctor of the University honoris causa of the University of South Australia, Doctor of Science honoris causa of La Trobe University, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, for the award of Doctor of the University honoris causa, bestowed by the Senate of The University of Queensland.
