Professor Peter Coaldrake AO

CITATION

Chancellor,

Professor Peter Coaldrake AO is a highly respected leader who has had a broad impact across the public sector and higher education nationally, but especially in his home state of Queensland.

Professor Coaldrake earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from James Cook University in 1973 and a Doctor of Philosophy from Griffith University in 1977 – the first doctorate ever conferred by the university. In 1980, he was awarded a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship to study politics and public policy in the United States and in 2001, he was recognised with a further Fulbright award, this time in higher education policy and management.

In 1990, Professor Coaldrake was named Chair and CEO of Queensland’s Public Sector Management Commission, the body established by the government to lead the modernisation of the Queensland public sector. In this pivotal role, he led reforms that strengthened transparency, accountability and ethical standards across the state’s public sector.

He was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in 1994 and went on to become QUT’s Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer in 2003. Over the following 15 years, Professor Coaldrake led the team that transformed QUT into a more confident and impactful institution by strengthening academic standards, focusing on students, modernising governance frameworks, building philanthropy and a healthy collaborative culture, as well as overseeing major campus developments.

In 2022, Professor Coaldrake released Let the Sunshine In, the landmark Review of Culture and Accountability in the Queensland Public Sector, also known as the ‘Coaldrake Review’. He is widely published, including 3 books with the University of Queensland Press.

Over the past decade, he has held multiple governance and leadership positions across the higher education, public service and community sectors. Professor Coaldrake has served as Chair of the Queensland Heritage Council; Chair of Jobs Queensland; and Chair of the Queensland Performing Arts Trust.

At the federal level, he served as Commissioner and Chief Commissioner of the Tertiary Education and Quality Standards Agency, overseeing robust quality assurance and regulatory practice that has elevated and safeguarded the global standing of Australia’s higher education system.

He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2011 for distinguished service to higher education and was named as a ‘Queensland Great’ in 2017.
