Lawrence Au

“There’s no ego in learning. You will never learn enough.”

Mr Lawrence Au has been at the forefront of Asia’s financial industry for more than 35 years. He is a recognised thought-leader and has lived and worked in Hong Kong and Singapore for most of his professional career.

Mr Au was the Asia Pacific CEO of the securities services business at BNP Paribas and Northern Trust for 16 years respectively. During their formative years, Mr Au was the driving force behind successfully establishing these banks as market leaders in the region. In his final years as chief executive, he provided leadership to over 2,000 staff in eight countries and 10 offices.

He has also held senior roles in some of the world’s most influential finance firms, including J.P. Morgan, The Bank of New York and Chase Manhattan Bank.

Mr Au has been recognised with numerous awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Asia Asset Management in 2016, Custodian Banker of the Year by The Asset in 2013 and Custodian Leader of the Year by Asia Asset Management in 2012.

In 2016, he published a book, Asia’s Financial Industry 1986-2016, which traces its development over the three decades and captures the key events during this process. His book, available in English and Chinese versions, is now part of the collections in a number of universities and public libraries across the globe.

Mr Au has also been active in mentoring young professionals and business start-ups, as well as supporting a number of philanthropic causes. He was also instrumental in setting up the Hong Kong Alumni Excellence Prize at The University of Queensland.
