Friends of Antiquity AGM and Sunday Series: from Tartarus to Infernus – classical figures in Dante's Inferno
Join UQ’s Friends of Antiquity for their AGM (optional) and July Sunday Series event, titled 'From Tartarus to Infernus: classical figures in Dante’s Inferno'.
When Dante enters the first circle of Hell, he is met by an eerie sound: the sighs of the great poets and philosophers of Classical Antiquity. Here in Limbo, Dante and his guide Virgil encounter Homer, Ovid, and Socrates, amongst others.
But these are the fortunate few. Below, in the infernal depths, others suffer eternal punishments far worse. Minos and Plutus, Odysseus and Diomedes, Brutus and Cassius – mythical and real, each condemned within Dante’s fourteenth-century vision of the underworld.
Join Dr James Lancaster as he encounters the souls of Antiquity trapped in the nine circles of Dante’s Inferno and explains the significance of their fates.
