Friends of Antiquity Sunday Series: night vision – what did Greeks and Romans do at night?
Join UQ’s Friends of Antiquity September Sunday Series event, ‘Night vision – what did Greeks and Romans do at night?'
In 1780, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg claimed, “Our entire history is only the history of waking men...” In doing so, he championed a standard view that the pre-modern night was a period of sleep and dreams alone because it lacked the benefits of modern lighting technology.
A group of Classicists are now challenging this assumption, hoping to rectify this misconception and answer the question: what did the Greek and Romans do at night?
Join Dr Estelle Strazdins as she explains the parameters of this exciting new project underway at The Australian National University and Australian Catholic University and some of its initial findings.
