Join UQ’s Friends of Antiquity for the August Sunday Series lecture ‘Cracking Wartime Codes through Art History,’ presented by Dr Gillian Shepherd – Senior Lecturer, Classics at La Trobe University.
Discover the remarkable story of Professor Trendall (1909–1995), one of the 20th century’s foremost classical art historians, whose pioneering work on South Italian vase painting remains fundamental to the study of the ancient Mediterranean.
Dr Shepherd will explore a lesser-known chapter of Professor Trendall’s life – his work in wartime intelligence during the Second World War.
Join us as Dr Shepherd examines how his ability to attribute thousands of ancient painted vases to individual hands made him a brilliant code-breaker.
