About the Board

The UQ Young Alumni Board serves as a vital link between the University and its young alumni, supporting their career growth, business endeavours and personal development beyond graduation. Led by passionate volunteers, the Board provides guidance, representation and support for the University's young alumni engagement plan.

Whether it's hosting events, developing webinars or organising fundraising initiatives, Board membership is an opportunity to activate your networks and bring your ideas and vision to the future of alumni engagement. You'll be part of a close-knit team, leading events and connecting with fellow young alumni locally and globally.

Who we're looking for

We're seeking alumni under 35 who completed their most recent UQ degree in 2025 or earlier and have a genuine passion for connecting with their peers. Preference will be given to applicants who have attended an alumni event or volunteered with UQ in the past 12 months.

What's involved

Board members serve a 2-year term, with the option to extend to a third year, particularly for those looking to take on a senior leadership role. The Board meets quarterly, complemented by planning days in February and July, which are held on weekends to fit around work commitments. Throughout the year, the Board delivers 10 events for UQ's young alumni community. The time commitment is typically 2 to 3 hours per week, with occasional peaks around events and major activities.

Our portfolios

The Board is made up of 3 portfolios, each with its own focus.

Social

The Social portfolio brings the young alumni community together through a calendar of social events. This portfolio suits those who enjoy creating memorable experiences and helping people build lasting connections.

Young Professionals

The Young Professionals portfolio delivers educational events for UQ alumni, both in person and online. It's well suited to those keen to help fellow graduates grow their skills and advance their careers.

Learn from Alumni

The Learn from Alumni portfolio connects alumni with current UQ students, showcasing diverse career journeys and the skills that shaped them. This portfolio is ideal for those passionate about giving back and helping students navigate life after university.

Leadership opportunities

Each portfolio is guided by a Portfolio Lead, who manages the portfolio and provides direction and support to its members.

The Board is also led by 2 senior leadership positions:

Deputy Chair
At the end of their first year, all Board members are eligible to step into the Deputy Chair role. The Deputy Chair takes on broader organisational responsibilities across the Board.

Chair
After serving as Deputy Chair, the Deputy Chair moves into the Chair position, leading the Board and setting its direction for the year ahead. This pathway is one of the reasons Board members may choose to extend their term to a third year.
