One of Australia's great didgeridoo players and composers, William Barton joins the UQ Symphony Orchestra (UQSO) as the 2022 Kinnane Distinguished Musician-in-Residence. Collaborating with violinist Véronique Serret to co-compose Bush{fire} Requiem (arranged for orchestra by Erik Griswold), William will also revisit his collaboration with former Head of the UQ School of Music Professor Philip Bračanin in a performance of the didgeridoo concerto Dance Gundah.
UQSO will then continue to explore music connected to the land and First Nations people through Antonin Dvořák's Ninth Symphony ("From the New World"), a work drawn from the composer's understanding of his new American home. Together, these works offer profound contrasts as well as rich connecting threads of heritage, culture and musical landscapes. The performance will open with a special Acknowledgement of Country by Aunty Delmae Barton, reflecting on music's enduring and ongoing relationship to the land across time.
