His Excellency The Honourable Sir James Ramsay CBE

1984

CITATION

MR. CHANCELLOR:

When His Excellency Sir James Ramsay became Governor of Queensland in 1977 he also began his association with this University as Visitor. In both offices he has served with the distinction and devotion to duty that have characterized his whole career.

After graduating from the Royal Australian Naval College, Midshipman Ramsay secured his first naval appointment in 1934. During the 1939-45 war he served as a Lieutenant on a long series of fighting ships of the Royal Australian and Royal Navy. Subsequently, by now promoted to the rank of Commander, he saw service in the Korean War, commanding HMAS Warramunga.

Sea-going duty was interspersed with various staff appointments, not only in naval administration but also in educational and diplomatic postings. In 1959 he returned to the Royal Australian Naval College at Jervis Bay as its Commanding Officer.

By now promoted to the rank of Commodore, his last term of duty was as Naval Officer Commanding the Western Australian Area and Commanding Officer of HMAS Leeuwin. Subsequently he served as Lieutenant-Governor of Western Australia from 1974 to 1977.

Sir James, with the unbounded support of Lady Ramsay, has brought to GovernĀment House, Queensland, rare enthusiasm and dedication. He has selflessly devoted himself to a wide range of activities, acknowledging the importance of the State of its industry, commerce, education, culture, professions, voluntary services, and sport. In so doing he has won the affection and respect of the whole community.

Mr. Chancellor, I present His Excellency Sir James Ramsay, Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order, Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Distinguished Service Cross, Governor of Queensland, for the award of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, to which he has been admitted by the Senate of the University.
