Dr Douglas (Doug) Hall AM

Dr Doug Hall is a notable art curator and critic known for his contribution as director of Queensland Art Gallery for 20 years.

Born in Victoria and educated at the Victorian College of the Arts, Dr Hall began his work as a gallery director in regional galleries before taking on the role of director of Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) in 1987. Under his leadership, QAG’s international partnerships flourished and the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art was founded. Dr Hall also led the establishment the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), which opened in 2006.

Dr Hall has served in an advisory capacity to a number of cultural organisations, including the Australia Council, the Australia International Cultural Council, the Asia Art Council, the Australia-Thailand Institute, the Victorian College of the Arts, the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation and New York’s Guggenheim Museum. He is also a respected writer, and has featured in publications including the Australian Financial Review and The Monthly.

In 1999, Dr Hall received a Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa from UQ, and in 2001 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia. In 2006, the Republic of France named him Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres.
