Simon Hewett

Simon Hewett has built impressive credentials as an international conductor since graduating from UQ in 1997 with First-Class Honours and a University Medal. He is currently the Music Director of the Queensland Youth Orchestra and continues to serve in the role of Principal Conductor with the Hamburg Ballet in Germany, along with the Principal Guest Conductor at the Canberra Symphony Orchestra for 2021.

Mr Hewett is passionately committed to continuing the great tradition of the Queensland Youth Orchestras, ensuring all of its orchestras and ensembles establish lifelong connections to music for local aspiring musicians. He also remains a passionate and meaningful supporter of the university and is committed to enhancing the visibility of UQ students across the globe and providing opportunities to study abroad.

In 2020, Mr Hewett and his wife Maria initiated with others the Berlin Residency Award, which provides a graduate student with accommodation as well as research and living expenses. He also serves as an active member of the UQ ChangeMakers board to provide strategic advice to shape the UQ ChangeMakers wider alumni engagement campaign.
