Josiah Wedgwood and the Classics presented by Dr Dorothy Watts AM
The name Wedgwood is synonymous with beautiful works of pottery, particularly in a distinctive blue, decorated with figures from the classical world of Greece and Rome and prized by collectors the world over. This talk looks at the origins of Wedgwood pottery and its political and artistic influences over more than two centuries. It also gives examples of how Wedgwood’s artists incorporated well-known and well–loved myths into some stunning works of art.
Dr Dorothy Watts AM is an Honorary Associate Professor in Ancient History in the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at the University of Queensland. She is former staff member and Head of the (former) Department of Classics and Ancient History, and is the author of three books and various articles focusing on her research on the religions and society of Celtic and Roman Britain. She is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators.
