The Federal Aged Care Taskforce recently released a report recommending increased contributions from elderly people for their aged care, based on a means test which would include the value of their home. The draft National Care and Support Economy Strategy, released for consultation in late 2023, also poses the possibility of changed funding arrangements.

Four out of every five people in Australia aged 70-74 are homeowners, according to Census data 2021.

What are the implications of a potential change in co-funding? And could older homeowners use the wealth accumulated from their home for spending on aged care and health care?

Professor Brenda Gannon, Professor, School of Economics, Faculty of BEL, will use evidence-based research to unpack the recommendations of the Taskforce report, and the current draft National Strategy for the Care and Support Economy.
