3T Event: remembering John Denis (Jack) Fryer

2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the passing of John Denis (Jack) Fryer, who received a UQ in 1915, aged 19.

During his studies, Jack served in the Australian Imperial Service from 1917-19 and was badly wounded in a German attack. Returning home to continue his Honours degree in Classics, Jack later succumbed to tuberculosis and died in 1923.

As a memorial to their former member and vice-president, members of the University Dramatic Society donated £10 to establish a collection of works in Australian literature in Jack’s honour. With this collection as its foundation, the Fryer Memorial Library of Australian Literature was established in 1927.

For over 90 years, the Fryer Library has been collecting a rich store of unique cultural material.

Attendees will enjoy the opportunity to examine and handle items in a special interactive display and have the opportunity to get up-close to rare books and original manuscripts.
