UQ Alumni Book Fair® and Rare Book Auction

About the UQ Alumni Book Fair

UQ Alumni Book Fair is an annual fundraiser based at The University of Queensland, usually held in April/May. Every two years, the Book Fair includes a Rare Book Auction. The Book Fair is organised by volunteers who harness their love of books and generously donate their time, to help raise funds for scholarships to support UQ students. Come along to the four-day book fair for a huge range of pre-loved books, magazines, sheet music, DVDs, videos, CDs, vinyl records, and even the occasional photograph, print or piece of memorabilia. Our group of tireless volunteers have made over 20 Book Fairs possible.

In 2021, the UQ Alumni Book Fair attracted more than 3,000 attendees and raised over $148,000 to support the Cairngorm-Kurrajong residential scholarships for UQ students.

Find out more about how the funds raised at the Book Fair are used to support students.

Donating books

Donations for the UQ Alumni Book Fair and Rare Book Auction can be left in the Book Shed, in the car park behind Building 82E, Seddon West, St Lucia campus, any time of day. The Book Bunker is also available for donations at UQ’s Long Pocket Campus, 80 Meiers Rd, Indooroopilly (adjacent to the Banksia loading bay). Please note that the Long Pocket Campus is not open outside office hours.

If you would like to donate a large quantity of books, please call the Book Group on +61 7 3346 3166. Your donations are gratefully accepted.

Volunteer to support the Book Fair

More than 110,000 books are prepared each year for the UQ Alumni Book Fair. Preparation consists of sorting, classifying, pricing and packing books, then setting them up for a four-days fair. The books not selected for sale are passed onto community organisations, locally and overseas.

Work in preparation for each Book Fair begins immediately after the last one has ended, with a team of volunteers known as the Book Group, based at UQ’s Long Pocket Campus working year-round.

The Book Group is a collection of book lovers, including retired academics, teachers and professionals from Brisbane and across the world, who meet regularly. These volunteers donate approximately 10,000 hours each year to make the UQ Alumni Book Fair a success. Anyone with a love of books and a willingness to donate their time is welcome to join this dedicated team.

If you would like to volunteer, please email uqalumni@uq.edu.au.

The Honourable Dr Penelope Wensley AC Patron, Alumni Friends
"Alumni Friends and the Book Fair Team are people devoted to the University, determined to stay connected to it and keeping it connected to the wider community, dedicated to the concept of giving back, and of finding practical ways to contribute to the University’s growth and well-being…”

Bob Gerrity, UQ Librarian, 2012 – 2018
"The Library collection would not be what it is today without the hard work of many individuals and organisations, especially the members and volunteers of Alumni Friends. We are so grateful for the contributions they have made, and continue to make, to improving the lives of our students and creating opportunities for them.
